eat like an afghan
authentic Afghani cuisine at home

Hey there! I'm Sajia - say it with me, Saj-ya! I'm not a chef or a cook, but I am Afghan and sometimes that's enough.
Growing up, eating around the dastarkhan - a tablecloth where the meal is set and served - became the moment my family and I could pause and truly be thankful for what we had - a meal and each other. I learned that with food comes stories and a sense of belonging; and that eating meals with others, whether loved ones or new friends, brings you closer and is truly a spiritual experience. When I'm not cooking the dishes I grew up on, I'm working on my children's books and teaching English at a local university.
I created this blog for two reasons. To share with others, Afghan or not, how to make authentic Afghani meals in their own kitchen. Afghans love to talk about their food and of course share their food - we're like the Italians of the East. And trust me, if I can cook, ANYBODY can. The other reason is to simply stay connected with my culture. I was two when my family left... or fled Afghanistan, so my mom's homecooking - which she learned from her mother and so on - is one of the ways I stay in touch with my roots.
I would love to hear your thoughts, suggestions and questions. So please, connect with me! And don't forget to add Eat Like an Afghan to your Instagram and Twitter pages!
Tashakur!
